As early as 3. 0 years old, but is commonly at 5. Essential hypertension, which is a sustained high blood pressure but its cause can’t be determined. These people are also highly susceptible to early heart attacks and brain attacks. Past the age of 5. This stage is believed to be more likely secondary (brought about by other causes) high blood pressure. Sex – According to studies, boys are more likely to have higher systolic blood pressure than girls. In fact, starting at age 1. Circulation December 2. Canadian participants). However, after women reach the age of 5. This sudden change is brought about by the loss of estrogen through menopause or removal of ovaries. Ethnic background – More common among African Americans as compared to Caucasians (see. Prevalence). Family history/ Hereditary – High Blood pressure have a tendency to run in the family. However, researchers cannot still demarcate how and which part of the human genes re responsible for high blood pressure. In addition to this, heredity also affects one’s body weight, which implies that people who are closely related are likely to have similar degrees of obesity. Modifiable factors: less active, overweight/ obese, consumption of salty foods, stressful lifestyle, smoking, and drinking. Diagnostic studies. Hematocrit: not diagnostic but assesses relationship of cells to fluid volume (viscosity) and may indicate risk factors such as hypercoagulability, anemia. Blood urea nitrogen (bun)/creatinine: provides information about renal perfusion/function. Glucose: hyperglycemia (diabetes mellitus is a precipitator of hypertension) may result from elevated catecholamine levels (increases hypertension). Serum potassium: hypokalemia may indicate the presence of primary aldosteronism (cause) or be a side effect of diuretic . Note: broad, notched p wave is one of the earliest signs of hypertensive heart disease. Treatment Medications: Thiazide diuretics – diuretics helps work by removing sodium and water, thus alleviating high blood pressure by reducing blood volume. Beta blockers – reduce blood pressure by diminishing the hearts workload and open the vessels. This will make the heart beats slower and less forceful. Salt and fluid retention contribute to increase blood pressure. Lifestyle Changes DASH Diet (healthier diet with less salt consumption)Quit smoking and limit alcohol drinking. Exercise regularly. Maintain a healthy weight or start reducing weight of overweight or obese. Nursing Priorities. Maintain/enhance cardiovascular functioning. Prevent complications. Severe hypertension is classified in the adult as a diastolic pressure elevation to 1. Systolic hypertension also is an established risk factor for cerebrovascular disease and ischemic heart disease, when diastolic pressure is elevated. Note presence, quality of central and peripheral pulses. Bounding carotid, jugular, radial, and femoral pulses may be observed/palpated. Pulses in the legs/feet may be diminished, reflecting effects of vasoconstriction increased systemic vascular resistance and venous congestion. Auscultate heart tones and breath sounds. Presence of crackles, wheezes may indicate pulmonary congestion secondary to developing or chronic heart failure. Observe skin color, moisture, temperature, and capillary refill time. Presence of pallor; cool, moist skin; and delayed capillary refill time may be due to peripheral vasoconstriction or reflect cardiac decompensation/decreased output. Note dependent/general edema. May indicate heart failure, renal or vascular impairment. Provide calm, restful surroundings, minimize environmental activity/noise. Limit the number of visitors and length of stay. Helps reduce sympathetic stimulation; promotes relaxation. Maintain activity restrictions, e. Reduces physical stress and tension that affect blood pressure and the course of hypertension. Provide comfort measures, e. Decreases discomfort and may reduce sympathetic stimulation. Instruct in relaxation techniques, guided imagery, distractions. Can reduce stressful stimuli, produce calming effect, thereby reducing bp. Nursing Interventions. Rationale Independent. Monitor response to medications to control blood pressure. Response to drug therapy (usually consisting of several Drugs, including diuretics, angiotensin- converting enzyme . These diuretics potentiate the effects of other antihypertensive agents as well, by limiting fluid retention, and may reduce the incidence of strokes and heart failure. Loop diuretics, e. These drugs produce marked diuresis by inhibiting resorption of sodium and chloride and are effective antihypertensives, especially in patients who are resistant to thiazides or have renal impairment. Potassium- sparing diuretics, e. May be given in combination with a thiazide diuretic to minimize potassium loss. Alpha, beta, or centrally acting adrenergic antagonists, e. Beta- blockers may be ordered instead of diuretics for patients with ischemic heart disease; obese patients with cardiogenic hypertension; and patients with concurrent supraventricular arrhythmias, angina, or hypertensive cardiomyopathy. Specific actions of these drugs vary, but they generally reduce bp through the combined effect of decreased total peripheral resistance, reduced cardiac output, inhibited sympathetic activity, and suppression of renin release. Note: patients with diabetes should use corgard and visken with caution because they can prolong and mask the hypoglycemic effects of insulin. The elderly may require smaller doses because of the potential for bradycardia and hypotension. African- american patients tend to be less responsive to beta- blockers in general and may require increased dosage or use of another drug, e. Calcium channel antagonists, e. May be necessary to treat severe hypertension when a combination of a diuretic and a sympathetic inhibitor does not sufficiently control bp. Vasodilation of healthy cardiac vasculature and increased coronary blood flow are secondary benefits of vasodilator therapy. Adrenergic neuron blockers: guanadrel (hylorel); guanethidine (ismelin); reserpine (serpalan); Reduce arterial and venous constriction activity at the sympathetic nerve endings. Direct- acting oral vasodilators: hydralazine (apresoline); minoxidil (loniten)Action is to relax vascular smooth muscle, thereby reducing vascular resistance. Direct- acting parenteral vasodilators: diazoxide (hyperstat), nitroprusside (nitropress); labetalol (normodyne)These are given intravenously for management of hypertensive emergencies. Angiotensin- converting enzyme (ace) inhibitors, e. Angiotensin ii blockers, e. The use of an additional sympathetic inhibitor may be required for its cumulative effect when other measures have failed to control bp or when congestive heart failure (chf) or diabetes is present. Implement dietary sodium, fat, and cholesterol restrictions as indicated. These restrictions can help manage fluid retention and, with associated hypertensive response, decrease myocardial workload. Prepare for surgery when indicated. When hypertension is due to pheochromocytoma, removal of the tumor will correct condition. Nursing diagnosis: Activity Intolerance. May be related to. Generalized weakness. Imbalance between oxygen supply and demand. Possibly evidenced by. Verbal report of fatigue or weakness. Abnormal heart rate or bp response to activity. Exertional discomfort or dyspnea. Electrocardiogram (ecg) changes reflecting ischemia; dysrhythmias.

Here are some key points about carbohydrates. More detail and supporting information is in the main article. Diets with High or Low Protein Content and Glycemic Index for Weight-Loss Maintenance. Thomas Meinert Larsen, Ph.D., Stine-Mathilde Dalskov, M.Sc. Carbohydrates: What You Need To Know. There are four major classes of biomolecules - carbohydrates, proteins, nucleotides, and lipids. Carbohydrates, or saccharides, are the most abundant of the four. More detail and supporting information is in the main article. They are a major food source and a key form of energy for most organisms. They are the main constituents of membranes in all cells (cell walls), food storage molecules, intermediaries in signaling pathways, vitamins A, D, E, and K, and cholesterol. They act as biological catalysts (enzymes), form structural parts of organisms, participate in cell signaling and recognition, and act as molecules of immunity. Proteins can also be a source of fuel. These molecules carry genetic information, as well as forming structures within cells. They are involved in the storage of all heritable information of all organisms, as well as the conversion of this data into proteins. A glycemic index diet is an eating plan based on how foods affect your blood sugar level. The glycemic index is a system of assigning a number to carbohydrate. Paul Jaminet, PhD is an astrophysicist from MIT and Berkley with a strong interest in health and diet which began after he experienced personal health. Saccharides consist of two basic compounds: aldehydes (double- bonded carbon and oxygen atoms, plus a hydrogen atom), and ketones (double- bonded carbon and oxygen atoms, plus two additional carbon atoms). Examples include glucose, galactose, or fructose. When we talk about blood sugar we are referring to glucose in the blood; glucose is a major source of energy for a cell. Examples of disaccharides include lactose, maltose, and sucrose. Screw glycemic index and glycemic load. The only thing you need to know is how many carbs is in that stuff. Bananas are a ton of carbs. I wouldn’t touch them.![]() If you bond one glucose molecule with a fructose molecule, you get a sucrose molecule. If you bond one glucose molecule with a galactose molecule, you get lactose, which is commonly found in milk. The chain may be branched (the molecule looks like a tree with branches and twigs) or unbranched (the molecule is a straight line). Polysaccharide molecule chains may be made up of hundreds or thousands of monosaccharides. Polysaccharides also have structural roles in the plant cell wall and the tough outer skeleton of insects. Humans and animals digest them using amylase enzymes. Rich sources of starches for humans include potatoes, rice, and wheat. Wood is mostly made of cellulose, while paper and cotton are almost pure cellulose. Most carbohydrate- rich foods have a high starch content. Carbohydrates are the most common source of energy for most organisms, including humans. We could get all our energy from fats and proteins if we had to. However, our brain requires carbohydrates, specifically glucose. Neurons cannot burn fat. So, the consumption of protein cannot be calculated in the same way as fats or carbohydrates when measuring our body's energy needs. A lot of dietary fiber is made of polysaccharides that our bodies do not digest. Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science; Mayo Clinic Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences; Mayo Clinic School of Medicine; Mayo Clinic School of Continuous. Diagnosis of disease is often the pivotal point to make a lifestyle change. Can we be proactive and minimize risk for rheumatoid arthritis (RA) with diet? One could easily argue for or against higher or lower carbohydrate intake, and give compelling examples, and convince most people either way. However, some factors have been present throughout the obesity explosion and should not be ignored. Less physical activity. A study published in the journal SLEEP identified an association with duration of sleep and obesity in both children and adults. A study by scientists from the United States and Slovakia revealed that neuropeptide Y (NPY), a molecule that the body releases when stressed, can 'unlock' Y2 receptors in the body's fat cells, stimulating the cells to grow in size and number. However, a few decades ago when their populations were leaner, carbohydrates made up a much higher proportion of their diets. Saying that a country's body weight problem is due to too much or too little of just one food component is too simplistic - it is a bit like saying that traffic problems in our cities are caused by badly synchronized traffic lights and nothing else. ![]() ![]() Most of them promote their branded nutritional bars, powders, and wrapped products which have plenty of colorings, artificial sweeteners, emulsifiers, and other additives - basically, junk foods. However, for good health, we do require carbohydrates. This glucose enters the blood, raising blood sugar (glucose) levels. ![]() When blood glucose levels rise, beta cells in the pancreas release insulin. As the cells absorb the blood sugar, blood sugar levels start to drop. Glucagon is a hormone that makes the liver release glycogen - a sugar stored in the liver. Insulin brings excess blood glucose levels down, while glucagon brings levels back up when they are too low. All these illnesses, together with insulin resistance, is called metabolic syndrome. Metabolic syndrome leads to type 2 diabetes. Natural carbohydrates, such as those found in fruits and vegetables, legumes, whole grains, etc., tend to enter the bloodstream more slowly compared with the carbohydrates found in processed foods. Good sleep and regular exercise also help regulate blood sugar and hormone control. A diet of foods less likely to spike blood sugar levels helps dieters lose more weight, according to a systematic review from Australia. Make sure the oats are as natural as possible; milling or grinding can increase their GI dramatically. Unfortunately, the processes often eliminate other nutrients, such as minerals, vitamins, and dietary fibers, leaving what is often no more than starchy endosperm (the inner part of the seed/grain, mainly starch). A well- balanced diet consisting of good quality foods is as important as physical activity and adequate sleep.
![]() A well- balanced and nutritional diet, such as the Mediterranean diet, plus healthy sleep and plenty of physical activity, is much more likely to lead to long- term success and good physical and mental health. Here are six sweet alternatives – and the best ways to use them. Whether you’re trying to cut calories or curb your consumption of refined products, reducing the table sugar in your diet is a smart start. To help you make the sweetest pick for stirring, sprinkling or baking, here’s our scoop on six sugar substitutes. Calorie- Free Sweeteners. Stevia. Derived from the leaf of a South American shrub, this natural substance is up to 2. Stevia- based products like Truvia and Pure Via are made from a purified extract of the plant, called rebaudioside A (Reb A), and sugar alcohols. Pros: It’s a natural sweetener that’s free of artificial chemicals. You also can use stevia in cooking and baking. Cons: Although the U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the use of Reb A as a sugar substitute, the whole leaf and crude extracts – sold as supplements in health food stores – have not been approved. Try it in: Anything that you would use sugar in. Keep in mind that stevia is more potent, so follow the recommended conversions on the label for baking and cooking. Aspartame. Found in diet drinks, sugar- free gum and those blue packets, this synthetic sweetener is sold under the brand names Equal and Nutra. Sweet. Pros: Introduced in 1. Despite the rumors, there’s no conclusive evidence of a link between aspartame and cancer, according to the FDA and American Cancer Society. Also, aspartame can trigger headaches or stomach discomfort in certain people, says registered dietitian Christine Gerbstadt, MD, a spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. In some sensitive people, it can trigger an inflammatory response as well. Try it in: Yogurt, coffee or sprinkled on fruit. Sucralose. Also called Splenda, and sold in yellow packets, it’s made from a chemically tweaked version of sugar that isn’t absorbed by the body. The sweetener is used in a bevy of products, such as soft drinks, cereals and baked goods. Pros: Because sucralose can withstand heat, you can use it for cooking and baking. In other words, cookies will turn out thinner and paler. Splenda Sugar Blend, a mixture of sugar and sucralose, may produce better results. Cons: Like aspartame, sucralose can lead to headaches and digestive issues in some people, says Gerbstadt. Try it in: Beverages, cooked dishes or baked goods. Check the label to see how much you should use as a substitution. Caloric Sweeteners. Pure Maple Syrup. Boiling down the sap of a maple tree creates this caramel- colored liquid. The sweetener contains about the same amount of calories as sugar – 1. Pros: It contains minerals the body needs, like manganese and zinc. Cons: Its distinct flavor affects the taste of drinks, dishes and baked goods, and not always in a desired way. Try it in: Sauces, dressings and other recipes – it’s not just for pancakes. In baking, substitute three- quarters to one cup of maple syrup for each cup of sugar. To keep the baked good from getting too moist, reduce the liquid in the recipe by three tablespoons. Agave. This liquid sweetener comes from the cactus- like agave plant. Its nectar is processed into syrup, which contains 2. Pros: Agave is lower on the glycemic index than other sweeteners, which means it doesn’t make blood sugar spike as high. The syrup also has a neutral flavor that works well in drinks and dishes. And because agave is about 5. Cons: If you’re trying to cut back on processed foods, agave may not be the way to go. And it’s more expensive than sugar. Try it in: Anything you would use sugar in. Whipping up cookies or muffins? Reduce the liquid in the recipe by about a quarter- cup per cup of substitution. Honey. Made by bees from the nectar of flowers, honey contains 2. Pros: “Honey is sweeter and thicker than sugar, so people tend to use less of it,” says Gerbstadt. It’s also a natural source of antioxidants, and swapping honey for sugar may keep LDL, or “bad,” cholesterol levels from rising, according to a 2. Journal of Medicinal Food. Cons: Honey should not be given to babies younger than 1. Try it in: Hot drinks, oatmeal, toast and yogurt. You can also use it in baked goods. Try replacing each cup of sugar with one cup less three tablespoons of honey. Reduce the liquid in the recipe by three tablespoons for each cup swapped, and add an extra pinch of baking soda to neutralize the acidity. Reviewed November 2. Want to read more? If there are foods on the list that you just don’t like to eat, you cannot replace it with a food you like, unless it is also on the list. To ensure you are eating the correct amount you may want to invest in a small kitchen scale, especially for your protein. If possible, your proteins should be organic, and look for grass- fed red meats. For all other approved foods, they should be organic as well, and most of your fruits and vegetables can be found at your local farmers market. HCG Approved Food List. HCG Approved Protein. The only starches allowed are Melba toast or Grissini breadsticks, and these should be used as sparingly as possible. How you consume these foods daily is why meal planning really helps. You’ll already know what you’re eating when, so you can look forward to your favorite meal, and you don’t need to worry about what you can eat later. Most users of the protocol find it best to have two small meals a day at lunch and dinner, and only drinking coffee or tea at breakfast. Still, other people find they have better success by spreading their meals out and eating breakfast and dinner, or dividing up their meals and by eating lunch and having a fruit serving at breakfast time. A lunchtime option is especially important to some dieters who may feel pressured to go out to lunch with their coworkers, or don’t want to talk about their lack of lunch with friends. One of the most important things to keep in mind when following the HCG diet is that you should never combine two of any one category together in the same meal, that means you should not eat your apple and orange at lunch, while having cabbage and celery for dinner. My free Top 7 HCG Diet Recipes takes all of this into account so I highly recommend you check that to make sure you're on the right track. A Typical HCG Diet Menu: While you are making your way through the HCG diet phase 2, you’ll find that changing up your daily meals and snacks alleviates the boredom you can sometimes feel when you eat the same thing each day. While a small, grilled chicken breast is easy to make and refrigerate for the week, it might not seem appetizing four days later. Some dieters like to eat a heavier protein at lunch time, and a light one, such as fish, for dinner. Dinner: 1. 00 grams of any one approved protein, 1 vegetable, 1 fruit and 1 starch. It is not uncommon, while on the protocol, to find that you do not feel hungry, and you should not feel alarmed. The most important thing to remember about the diet is that you should never exceed 5. So, if you find you’re not as hungry one day, then it’s alright to skip a fruit, vegetable, or starch. However, do not skip your protein, because your body needs it in order to function properly. If you find yourself weak, or feeling hungry, then do not skimp in any way. The goal is to always eat to your hunger. It is through this mechanism that your body will begin to breakdown the fat stored in your body, and you will see changes not only in your weight but in your overall shape. What HCG Phase 2 Recipes Are Available? If you search online for HCG recipes you’re sure to find hundreds of them. HCG diet recipes are unique in that there are only a few ingredients to work with, you can’t add too many vegetables to one plate, and no starches are allowed either. Taste of the Wild Dog Food Reviews, Coupons and Recalls. Brief Overview. Taste of the Wild is a grain free pet food for dogs and cats. Most of the dog foods have a higher meat protein content than conventional dog foods but the price is less than some of the most expensive high protein brands such as Orijen. Who manufactures Taste of the Wild? Taste of the Wild dog food is made by Diamond Pet Food, owned by Schell & Kampeter, Inc., a family- owned, privately held company founded in 1. Their headquarters is in Meta, Missouri. Neither Diamond nor Taste of the Wild mentions this connection on their web sites or in other places, probably because Diamond has a history of product recalls (mostly due to Salmonella problems in their plants but also due to aflatoxins in some foods) and Taste of the Wild is marketed as a premium dog food. ![]() ![]() According to Taste of the Wild, their food is manufactured in four facilities in the U. S.: one is in northern California, one in central California, one in Missouri and one in South Carolina. Some people who feed Taste of the Wild are such fans of the food (and dislike Diamond so much) that they refuse to believe it is made by Diamond but you can show them the legal paper work below for the class action settlement. Taste of the Wild also includes various pre- and probiotics such as chicory root and some fermentation products that are usually added after cooking to help digestion. The foods also have chelated minerals which are easier for dogs to digest and which are usually found in better dog foods. Taste of the Wild foods are AAFCO approved for various life stages as noted on their labels and on the web site. Most people who feed Taste of the Wild dog foods report being very happy with them. The ingredients appear to be of good quality and, nothwithstanding the fact that the food is made by Diamond which makes some people uneasy, and the fact that the food has had a recall, Taste of the Wild seems to be a good quality food that is not subject to the same problems that Diamond has with some of its other foods. Taste of the Wild is a premium dog food and it’s not inexpensive but it costs less than some of the most expensive grain free foods. If you’re looking for a good grain free dog food at a moderate price, Taste of the Wild is one to consider. Taste of the Wild Consumer Ratings: Our Taste of the Wild Pacific Stream Canine Formula Review: Taste of the Wild Pacific Stream canine formula is a fish and potato kibble. The food is grain free with salmon, potato fiber, and sweet potatoes. According to Taste of the Wild (or TOTW), the food is good for dogs with a sensitive stomach. It has 2. 5 percent crude protein and 1. On a dry matter basis, the food has 2. It is AAFCO approved for adult maintenance. The first five ingredients in this food are: Salmon. Ocean fish meal. Sweet potatoes. Potatoes. Canola oil. There is also salmon meal and smoked salmon a little later in the list. It’s fair to say that the food contains a generous amount of salmon. Salmon is the first ingredient and it’s an excellent food for dogs. This is whole salmon so it contains a lot of moisture. If the moisture were removed, this ingredient would be lower in the list, but we think there is still a lot of salmon in the food. The company says that their salmon comes from Alaska. Among ocean fish, salmon contains very little mercury. The fish is also deboned before it is used. TOTW also says that they only use vendors who do not use ethoxyquin for their fish and other meals. Nutritionally, salmon is 6. It’s very easy for dogs to digest, as is fish in general, and the source of a number of vitamins and minerals. Salmon is also a great source of omega- 3 fatty acid – the very best kind of omega- 3 fatty acid for your dog’s skin and coat and other needs. The second ingredient is ocean fish meal. The fish comes from different species and different areas at different times of the year and then processed for food. Ocean fish meal is a good source of omega- 3 fatty acid and it has about 6. The third ingredient in this kibble is sweet potatoes. Sweet potatoes are becoming known as a super food. This is a little less important for dogs but if your dog has a sensitive stomach then sweet potatoes may play an important role in his diet. They are 9. 3 percent carbohydrates, 6 percent protein, and 1 percent fat. They’re a a good source of dietary fiber, vitamin B6 and potassium, and a very good source of vitamin A, vitamin C and manganese. They also contain iron, calcium, and beta carotene. They are a complex carb and they can help your dog feel full all day. Potatoes, the fourth ingredient, are not quite as much of a super food as sweet potatoes, but they are still a good source of vitamins and minerals, as well as fiber. They are 9. 2 percent carbs, 7 percent protein, and 1 percent fat. They’re a good source of vitamin C, vitamin B6, potassium and manganese. They’re highly digestible and a good source of energy. The fifth ingredient is canola oil. Not as good as salmon as a source of omega- 3 fatty acid, but still a good source of omega- 3 and omega- 6 fatty acid. Other ingredients of interest in the food include the prebiotic dried chicory root to encourage good digestion; blueberries and raspberries which are antioxidants and natural preservatives; and a number of fermentation products/extracts which are usually added to the food after it has finished baking in order to encourage better digestion. Taste of the Wild Pacific Stream Canine formula looks like a good food for dogs who might have sensitive stomachs, or for any dog who likes salmon and potatoes/sweet potatoes. The protein and fat percentages are moderate and the ingredients look good. We don’t see anything here for someone to object to, especially if they like a grain free dog food. Where can you buy Taste of the Wild? You can buy Taste of the Wild dog food from specialty pet food retailers such as Pet. Smart and Pet. Co and from feed stores such as Tractor Supply Company store. You can also buy it online from pet food retailers such as Petfooddirect. About Rope Worms. The Rope worm as a possible new type of parasite was presented recently at a 2. Its existence and the patented treatment methods are now being promoted by alternative health experts such as Dr Dietrich Klinghardt for sufferers of Lyme’s Disease, Morgellons and even children with Autism. Patients generally report significant improvements in their state of health after eliminating rope worms. It is suggested that the Rope worm triggers the gut to produce a body for it that may be a mix of parasites and human DNA. Rope parasites can leave human body with enemas, and are often mistaken for intestinal lining, feces, or decayed remains of other parasites. According to one of their papers,Parasite adult stages live in human gastro- intestinal tract and are anaerobic. They move inside the body by releasing gas bubbles utilizing jet propulsion. Rope parasites look like a rope, and can be over a meter long. It takes tens of years for them to fully develop into mature species (fifth stage). The fourth stage look similar, but the parasite is shorter and has softer slimier body. The third stage looks like branched jellyfish. The second stage is viscous snot, or mucus with visible gas bubbles that act as suction cups. The first stage is slimier mucus with fewer bubbles, which can reside almost anywhere in the human body. The first paper quoted above describes in detail each development stage and can be found here: *WARNING: There are graphic images in the following papers. The second paper gives a general overview and details the workings of this infection: Here are link for the patents mentioned in the papers and videos.
